Read: Envision, Ch. 3 and Transition, Ch. 7 (p. read 138-155; skim the rest)
Taken together, these two chapters point to the ways that we use established patterns to create arguments based on evidence from others and from our own observations. Any argument we make exists in a context of evidence from others. Chapter 7 of Transition discusses why academic arguments must be made in reference to this evidence from others, and Chapter 3 of Envision helps us organize our thoughts in established patterns and with attention to both content and style.
